Stéphane Lambiel lends his support to SOS Children’s Villages

September 9, 2010

SOS Children’s Villages has a new ambassador in the person of Stéphane Lambiel. During his visit to the SOS children’s village of Ben Tre, Vietnam, the two times world champion and Olympic silver medalist in figure skating convinced himself of the importance of the work pursued by this organisation dedicated to childhood.

“Aren’t you cold on the ice with such a thin costume?” asks 8-year-old Tuong to Stéphane Lambiel during his visit of the SOS children’s village of Ben Tre in the south of Vietnam. The 134 children of the village all want to meet the new ambassador of SOS Children’s Villages to ask him questions. Patiently, the 25-year-old young man answers each of them and gives them a demonstration of his athletic skills. The children are very impressed by the triple twist performed by the native of Valais on their playing field. A spectacular feat: on the ice, it is only possible to achieve one additional rotation.

“My visit to this SOS children’s village has been one of the most beautiful and meaningful moments in my life” says Stéphane Lambiel. “The laughing and happiness of these children are unique.” He knows that this cheerfulness has not always been so obvious. The children have endured difficult times and lost one or both of their parents. “Seeing them so happy, in spite of everything, proves that the work of SOS Children’s Villages pays off” declares Stéphane Lambiel.

More than a roof

The atmosphere in the SOS children’s village proves to the skater that the abandoned children need more than a roof: “In the SOS children’s village, they live with the love and security of a family. This love is so beautiful it also reflects on me.” That’s why Stéphane Lambiel is committing himself to being the new ambassador of SOS Children’s Villages. He will do so in drawing attention to the precious work of SOS Children’s Villages and in financially assisting the organisation.

Stéphane Lambiel spent two days in the SOS children’s village of Ben Tre in the Mekong Delta in-between two shows in Japan. He saw that the work of SOS Children’s Villages exceeds the boundaries of the village: “It represents a huge help that the school, the kindergarten and the professional training centre are open to the children and teenagers of the surrounding neighbourhood” he says.
